Concertina Description

An odd one!

This is a Wheatstone No 1892 which would be late 1840's to 1850.

It would originally have had wooden ends and probably metal buttons and brass reeds.

Written inside in copperplate handwriting it states that it was fitted with steel reeds in 1869 by Roylance-another Victorian maker.

One presumes that at some point in the 20th Century its ends were smashed and as the only company working in the latter parts of that century-it was sent to Harry Crabb's workshop for a new set of ends and a new set of bellows. Whether by choice or for reasons of price it was fitted with a very basic set of aluminium ends.

I won't say that it looks fantastic but it is very sound and plays very well with a surprisingly mellow tone.

If you want some original masterpiece then this isn't for you. If you want a decent playing concertina that will take a bit of wear with solid bellows and ends-it could just be right for you.
