A Lachenal concertina no 13123 c 1850's. It has a label for Thomas Dawkins, Clerkenwell, London-but he was a dealer not a maker.
It has rosewood ends, bushed bone buttons-the bushing is important because it keeps the action quiet-and all decent concertinas have it -brass reeds and 5 fold bellows + original case.
It has just come back from a restoration which involved fitting new pads, valves ,straps and tuning to concert pitch.
Like most brass reeded concertinas it is gentle and with a mellow sound-but unlike a lot of them it has a responsive set of reeds that play easily. For its age it is in fabulous condition and would suit an improver who is playing a cheap copy or a learner who wants a decent playing, value holding instrument to start with instead of a money-losing plastic copy-which will only cost a little less.
