Concertina Description

This is one of those things which you rarely ever see. It is a 46 key Wheatstone Maccann Duet of very high quality which is very special as it was made for a showman-it comes in half so that both sides can be played independently. The idea is that you are playing a tune and then with a flick of the wrist-the concertina comes into two pieces and you continue to play. It works because the bellows are built in two sections and have a slide between the two ends. When I bought the instrument I had some idea what it was because I had once seen a similar miniature-the only other in in 42 years of collecting and dealing! The difference with the miniature is that this instrument came with two lead weights. I wondered what they were for but realised that when the concertina came in two the bellows would not fall as they have too little weight to make the reeds sound. I had the weights put back inside and now the concertina works as it should-but of course it is then quite heavy. The advantage of this system is that the weights can be removed when you do not wish it to be a trick instrument-the slide can be held in place with two small screws and it plays just like any other 46 key Maccann and weighs no more. The instrument itself is number 27872 -1918 -and has raised metal ends, steel reeds and a total of 10 folds in the two halves of the bellows. It has been fitted with new pads, valves, straps and tuned to concert pitch. It is a top quality concertina with great reeds, in good condition and in its original case. The case itself is in very worn but shows that the instrument must have been made with the extra bellows-as it fits properly-even though it isn't mentioned as a "special" in the Wheatstone ledgers. I don't really know who would want this concertina. Obviously it is a rare historical and collectors item but it would be great to think that there was someone out there-playing Maccann-who would love an instrument that would cause laughter and confusion in a performance. As I have said-it can be set up to play as a standard Maccann-and it is a very good example of a quality one
